Accessibility

We want this website to be usable by everyone. Here is what we have built in, and how to tell us when we can do better.

The site follows the settings you already have

There is no separate accessibility widget on this site. The settings on your phone, tablet or computer reach every page directly, so you set them once and they work everywhere, not only here.

  • Larger text: use your browser's zoom (the aA menu in Safari on iPhone, the zoom control or Ctrl/Cmd and + on a computer) or the text-size setting in Chrome on Android. Every size on this site scales with it.
  • Higher contrast: turn on "Increase contrast" on iPhone or Mac, or a high-contrast theme on Android or Windows. The site switches to darker secondary text and stronger lines when your device asks for it.
  • Less motion: turn on "Reduce motion" and the blind-drop animation in the One or two? picker, and smooth scrolling, stop.

What we have built into the site

We have aimed this website at the principles of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. We do not hold a formal accessibility certification or audit, but we have designed and tested toward these goals:

  • If your device asks for reduced motion or more contrast, the site honours it automatically.
  • Text colours are chosen for contrast against their backgrounds.
  • The layout adapts to phones, tablets and desktops, so nothing is cut off or trapped off-screen.
  • Photographs carry alternative text; decorative images are marked so they do not add noise.
  • Headings and page landmarks, so screen readers can move through content in a sensible order, and a skip link to the main content.
  • A logical tab order and visible focus states. The One or two? picker works with Tab and Enter, or the 1 and 2 keys, and announces each choice.
